Meet our weavers

Our products are sourced directly from the talented artisan weavers of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Hidalgo in southern Mexico. Each region has its own rich cultural heritage and distinct weaving techniques.

With their rich biodiversity, these regions produce weaving products deeply connected in the land, using natural fabrics like cotton and wool blends, and employing natural dyes whenever possible.

Chiapas showcases the artistry of Backstrap Looms, while Oaxaca excels in the mastery of Pedal Looms. Hidalgo contributes to our collection with the intricate beauty of Otomi Embroidery. Dive deeper into the stunning uniqueness of these art forms below!

Chiapis - Back Strap Loom

The indigenous people of Chiapis are skilled masters of Backstrap Weaving, Mexico's most traditional form of weaving. This ancient technique involves two hand-carved wood beams, with one strapped to their backs and the other secured to a wall or object. With precision and artistry, the weaver intricately strings the threads through these beams, giving birth to stunning tapestries.

Oaxaca - foot pedal loom

The introduction of the Pedal Loom to Mexico by the Spanish revolutionized the weaving process. By utilizing pedals to separate threads, the weavers achieve greater productivity and can create wider pieces like blankets and rugs, unrestricted by the weaver's arm span. In Oaxaca, the predominantly indigenous artisans have mastered this newer method of weaving, showcasing their expertise and creativity.

hiladgo - otomi embroidery

The captivating artistry of Otomi Embroidery is a renowned form of stitching crafted by the indigenous Otomi people of Hidalgo. Otomi women first sketch intricate designs by hand that come to life through colorful embroidered decorations, skillfully applied using a satin herringbone stitch that gracefully appears on one side of the cloth. From designs symbolizing animals and plants native to the area, to gods and mythological creatures, Otomi Embroidery tells a vibrant story through thread and needle.

Natural Dyes AND FABRICS

The weaving products from these regions are deeply connected to the biodiversity of the land. Vibrant colors of fabric threads and strings are often achieved through the use of natural dyes, carefully extracted from plants, shells, minerals, and even insects. Meticulous hand dipping and drying processes allow these natural elements to be skillfully absorbed, resulting in breathtaking hues.
